About Us
Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting and taking a moment to read what we're all about!

This web site was developed to promote the villages at the southern end of the Southern Highlands as well as their surrounding areas, which collectively are the Southern Gateway to the Southern Highlands.

Our area has been largely overlooked for decades by the larger towns in the Southern Highlands, as being of little interest. We are excluded from publications, tourist information and travel guides. If any of our area's attractions rate a mention, they are associated with better known towns eg "Badgery's Lookout 20kms south of Bundanoon" or located "in the northern area of the Bungonia SRA", which of course it's not! Shame on all the tourist aurthorities.

Our area has the best of the best of the Southern Highlands! Our scenery is awesome, with many opportunities to enjoy unspoiled wilderness including the best of Morton National Park and the Ettrema Wilderness. The history of the area is interesting (including bushrangers, convicts and prominent pioneers) and we can boast about having many endangered species of flora and fauna that no longer exist in other areas of the Southern Highlands.

Our area is growing at a rapid rate along with other areas in the corridor between Sydney and Canberra. Former large holdings used for Primary Production are seeing the beginning of a new era as lifestyle acres for those looking for a "sea change" and are reaping the benefits for their families with a better quality of life away from the larger cities.

Where's Tallong?
Most residents ask this question. Until recently nobody was able to answer definitely whether Tallong belonged to the Southern Highlands or the Southern Tablelands. We can now definitely answer the question. Tallong is indeed part of the Southern Highlands.

The misconception that Tallong belongs to the Southern Tablelands is probably because the area is now part of the Mulwaree Shire Council. The Tallong area was previously under the umbrella of Wingecarribee Shire Council, but around 1950, Tallong residents petitioned to become part of Mulwaree Shire because they were unhappy with the services Wingecarribee Shire Council were (or weren't) providing. This may well be the basis for many people from other areas of the Southern Highlands wrongly believing that Tallong is a village of the Southern Tablelands.

The official sources we consulted to put an end to the misconception were the Mitchell Library in Sydney, and the Federal Government's Mapping Agency, Auslig. Both sources confirmed that Tallong is indeed part of the Southern Highlands. So, if you happen to see Tallong listed as part of the Southern Tablelands (and you definitely will) you now know that it's been listed wrongly on the basis of heresay, not fact!

How we're doing!
Since launching this site in September 2001, we've seen a constant increase in our visitors and page views each month. In October 2003, we are now visited by over 3,000 visitors viewing in excess of 6,000 pages from over 46 countries per month! Not bad for a small rural area!

Thank you to Peter Vincent who has kindly allowed us to use his image of Caoura Barn in the new header for this web site. Peter lives outside our area on the south coast of New South Wales and he's also a regular rider in the Tallong Trail Ride as well as a regular visitor to this web site.

We hope you enjoy visiting our site, and return to see what's happening in our part of the world from time to time. Subscribe to our newsletter so you don't miss out on anything that's happening on the Highland Way!

Thanks for visiting!
